First Cruyff Court in Sub-Saharan Africa built by Cargill and Cruyff Foundation

On Friday, January 27, 2023, GNBCC had the honor of gracing the official Commissioning Ceremony of the Cruyff Court in Tema Meridian. The Cruyff Court was funded by GNBCC’s member Cargill.

Cargill has been sourcing cocoa from Ghana for over 40 years and in 2008, opened its state-of-the-art cocoa processing facility in Tema. Today the company has around 240 employees processing cocoa products to service food and confectionary customers locally and around the world. 

The ceremony started with a welcome address by Mrs. Bernice Ofori, Director of Education- Tema Metropolitan. There were also addresses by the Mayor of Tema- Hon Yohane Amarh Ashitey; Managing Director of GNBCC Member Cargill, Aedo van der Weij and CEO of Cruyff Foundation, Niels Meijer.

Honorable Yusuf Mustapha, Minister of Youth & Sports gave the keynote address in which he commended the Cruyff Foundation and Cargill on this project which will have a positive impact on youth sports in Tema.

The ultra-modern facility, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa, has male and female changing rooms, floodlights, security fencing and is fully accessible to visitors with disabilities. This happened at the Mante-Din School at Tema Community 1.

Sixteen (16) local coaches have been trained as official Cruyff Coaches. They have the duty to support the activities of the youth as well as to ensure they keep to the leadership values on and off the court.
