Introducing New GNBCC Member-East West Seed

East-West Seed is a Dutch vegetable seed company that specializes in developing tropical varieties.

For farmers to succeed, they need high-quality seeds that suit the local climate, disease and climatic pressures and the local market preferences. The company works on improving farmer’s income with better seeds and knowledge to fight poverty and strengthen food security.

After a thorough market mapping of the African landscape, Ghana is highlighted in the East-West Seed (EWS) 5-year strategic plan as a top-priority country. The company sees great market potential and a cultural fit with the smallholder farmers of Ghana.

At East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation (EWS-KT), our strategy is to showcase profitable and sustainable farming practices to smallholder vegetable farmers struggling with poor yields in less developed markets.

We provide intensive, hands-on training in improved farming techniques to farmers in their own fields, and these plots are used to train other farmers and to demonstrate the potential of good production methods and quality inputs. EWS-KT works hand in hand with farming communities in 10 countries in Africa and Asia and recently expanded to Ghana.

Now that EWS-KT is officially registered in Ghana, we are going to set-up a learning site in Sunyani. This will function as a training center for new staff and other sector professionals and will showcase different techniques for a variety of crops to farmers. We are planning to start training farmers in July 2023.

For the next few months, the main priority is to build dedicated and skilled EWS and EWS-KT teams. EWS will improve the availability of high-quality seeds, and the EWS-KT team will bring capacity building for farmers and sector professionals into the equation.
