HBP and IDH Host Successful Mini Fruit and Vegetable Fair in Sunyani

On June 28, 2024, the VAG Parade Square in Sunyani was abuzz with excitement as the Horticulture Business Platform (HBP) hosted its second mini fruit and vegetable fair of the year. Organized in collaboration with IDH and in partnership with the Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC) and the Netherlands Embassy, the event brought together 23 vendors, including fruit and vegetable farmers, fruit processors (juices and dried fruits), processors of herbs and spices, seed and plant protection suppliers amongst others.

The fair was honored by the presence of the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, and her entourage. In her opening address, Minister Banahene expressed her admiration for the dedication and hard work of farmers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in the horticulture industry, noting that the event exemplified their collective efforts. She highlighted the fair as a valuable opportunity to showcase the diversity and quality of produce grown in the Bono region and emphasized its role as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas to improve agriculture.

Minister Banahene applauded the vision and effort of HBP and IDH, noting that such collaborative efforts are essential for fostering growth and development in the sector. She urged farmers to leverage the fair to learn about new technologies, sustainable practices, market trends, and to make meaningful partnerships that would enhance productivity and profitability. She concluded by emphasizing the importance of healthy nutrition and encouraging people to include more fruits and vegetables in their diet.

Following the minister’s speech, the exhibition was officially launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. HBP stakeholders engaged with all the vendors, providing a platform for businesses to describe their activities and share information for potential collaborations. These interactions were captured by the media, offering much-needed publicity for the participating companies.

The event facilitated vendor-to-vendor visits, allowing participants to explore avenues for partnerships and make valuable connections. Onsite evaluation forms were distributed, and the majority of participants expressed satisfaction with all aspects of the event, offering recommendations for future improvements.

The fair concluded on a positive note with closing remarks from Barnabas Apom, the project coordinator. He expressed gratitude to all vendors and attendees for their participation and extended invitations to the upcoming fairs in Tamale and Accra, scheduled for August and September, respectively.

The mini fruit and vegetable fair in Sunyani not only highlighted the diversity of the Bono region’s agricultural sector but also fostered a spirit of collaboration and innovation among stakeholders.
